Definition: A live shot is a common TV news term for a live, in-the-field report. A live shot takes special gear in order to transmit a story from the scene.

A television station or network may use a microwave truck to beam back a live report if the location is near a receiver tower. A satellite truck is used for longer distances or circumstances where terrain is an issue.

In the future, more live reporting may be transmitted through fiber optics or over the internet. That will allow crews more flexibility because cumbersome trucks won't have to haul gear to the story location.

A live report may consist entirely of a reporter talking into the camera. Often, they include a taped voiceover, vosot or package.
