Yahoo fans will start seeing a new home page design starting today. The company hopes the changes will lure you into visiting more often and have you staying longer.

Sound familiar? Virtually every website designer hopes for the same outcome with every revision. Yet in reality, the results are often mixed. Fans don't like someone with itchy trigger fingers shooting down the layout they love.

This is the first Yahoo home page facelift in four years. Set the dial on your wayback machine to 2009 to see how the previous redesign was received.

Since that time, Yahoo's annual revenue drop has approached 30%. It's clear that new CEO Marissa Mayer needs to do something. Her success at rival Google makes this more than just a change in window dressing.

Still, if your media website's growth has stalled, there are pros and cons to consider before pulling out the hatchet on your web design. Look at the 10 most common design mistakes on media sites.

While an obvious goal is to increase web traffic and revenue, poor navigation and too many ads are two basic turnoffs, no matter if you have cool colors and trendy fonts.

Don't expect to see a similar revolutionary new look from Yahoo as when USA Today revamped its site and newspaper in September. It took me some time to notice Yahoo had changed, and I go to the site nearly every day. In a few months, we'll be able to tell whether these tweaks are enough to bring about the shift in revenue that Mayer seeks.

What do you think of the Yahoo home page redesign?
