Top 10 Facebook Topics of 2011

While a survey shows Justin Bieber was the top trending topic on Twitter in 2011, Facebook users had more serious issues to discuss. Its top global topic for the year was the death of Osama bin Laden.

Pop culture took a back seat to hard news among Facebook's top 10 topics. Others on its list include Casey Anthony found not guilty, the death of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, military operations in Libya and Hurricane Irene.

There were a few celebrities to make the top 10 -- Charlie Sheen, Amy Winehouse's death and the Royal Wedding. But even those items were newsier than Bieber and Lady Gaga, who were in Twitter's top 3, in addition to soccer.

That suggests Facebook users are probably older and more inclined to be news viewers and readers. Anecdotes about grandparents using Facebook may be verified by this top 10 list, because older Americans tend to be larger news consumers than younger adults and teens.

Those of us who work in media tend to lump Facebook and Twitter together when it comes to developing a social media strategy. But if the two sites' demographics are proven to be much different, we should target the sites differently.

Which should get the priority as you build your brand online? It depends on which audience you want to reach. Your goal should be to bring these people to your website or your print or broadcast property, because that's where you likely make your money.

I really can’t believe that the most talked about subject over@ Twitter is Justin Bieber! What is there to talk about? He is a little boy who has a cute, bubblegum voice and swoons the girls, but other than that, really what is there to talk about?? lol

Over at Facebook, members not even look smarter.. They write smarter as well!

I never have been a fan, nor a member at Twitter. I think FB is a much more user friendly social media outlet…
